In 1 Kings 2, we learn about David and what he said to Solomon, his son, before his death, and also the fate of Adonijah and Joab. I do pray that you will read this chapter so that you can understand the details of what I just mentioned. However, for this message, we will focus on what David said and how to apply this teaching to our life now. Here is what is recorded, 1“now the days of David drew nigh that he should die; and he charged Solomon his son, saying, I go the way of all the earth: be thou strong therefore, and shew thyself a man; And keep the charge of the Lord thy God, to walk in his ways, to keep his statutes, and his commandments, and his judgments, and his testimonies, as it is written in the law of Moses, that thou mayest prosper in all that thou doest, and whithersoever thou turnest thyself: That the Lord may continue his word which he spake concerning me, saying, If thy children take heed to their way, to walk before me in truth with all their heart and with all their soul, there shall not fail thee (said he) a man on the throne of Israel.” (1 Kings 2:1-4) Did you get all that? All throughout David’s life, God was near unto him and his needs. This was because David continually sought His face in prayer, worship, and song. Even in his last moments, we can learn what it should be like for every Christian to live and then die unto the Lord. We don’t just live a portion of our lives for God and then die in our sins. We also do not live all our lives in sin and then at the end, cry out in our last moments for mercy. Though the later is better than the first option, God knows the true intentions of our hearts. Sure, if we were sincere in our confessions at the end, we will be saved, but if we are not, then we will be judged along with every unbeliever.
So now let’s examine what David said. He said to show ourselves a man or woman unto God. To keep what He has commanded in our hearts and also walk in His ways. This is loving Him. So hear and also do as God says, as James said. 2“But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.” (James 1:22) Then, he said to keep what God has said in His word and obey His commandments. Even His judgments and His testimonies do we keep close to our hearts. Not the statutes of the law of Moses any longer, but what is still important that was spoken by God. There is so much to learn and grow from the Old and New Testament. Even the teachings in the New Testament, we should pay close attention to, for every teaching therein is for our every day walk with Christ in our lives. As David said, we know that the Lord God is our judge, so the judgments he already put upon the people of Israel and now, we can learn from. Therefore, we do not fall victim to the same things that others have, when it comes to going against God and allowing His wrath to come upon them, even unknowingly. Unknowingly now, but in death, these things will be brought to people’s attention in full force. David also said that doing God’s will causes a person to prosper upon the earth. This can be spiritually or physically, but all according to God’s will. Now, the last thing that David said, I will quote this once again because of its importance. He said, 1“If thy children take heed to their way, to walk before me in truth with all their heart and with all their soul, there shall not fail thee (said he) a man on the throne of Israel.” (1 Kings 2:4) Please remember this message and take it to heart today. You do not know if your death is coming soon. So live each for God and you will be blessed.
Let us pray:
Oh Lord, I pray that I will stay strong in the faith. That Satan’s power will not come upon me, in order for me to fall into sin and shame. I know where I stand with You now, and I do not wish to lose it. You are my God and I worship You now and forever. The devil may come with his temptations, and they may seem good on the outside, but really they are so filthy. I can no longer willfully sin and feel like I am right with You, God. And I pray that Christians throughout the world will feel the same way. That sin leads to death and not life eternal with You in heaven. We can be satisfied while in our fleshly ways for a time, but that will never lead to true happiness. Only those that love what you love and hate what You hate are fit for Your kingdom. This is the born again lifestyle. Where we no longer live for ourselves but live for You. Even our own standards are no more but are now built upon the rock of Jesus. Yes, Lord, our foundation is now secure because we have built our house upon the rock, which will never be destroyed. Only those people whose foundation is built upon the sand, will it all vanish come death. For this reason, God, do I live my life to serve You. I delight in walking in Your ways, so I keep Your statues close to my heart at all times. Your commands are now my commands, for I love Your ways. Your words are sweeter than honey. You have opened my eyes that I may see You and live. You have opened my ears that I may hear Your voice and follow You. I will walk this life with You by my side, even until my last breath is taken. I love too much to desert You. Amen.
