Today we will focus our time and effort in understanding the type of wisdom that God gave Solomon, and also what came about from all of it. So to get started, we will open up the Bible together to 1 Kings, chapter 4, and begin our study with verse 29. It reads, 2“and God gave Solomon wisdom and understanding exceeding much, and largeness of heart, even as the sand that is on the sea shore. And Solomon’s wisdom excelled the wisdom of all the children of the east country, and all the wisdom of Egypt. For he was wiser than all men; than Ethan the Ezrahite, and Heman, and Chalcol, and Darda, the sons of Mahol: and his fame was in all nations round about. And he spake three thousand proverbs: and his songs were a thousand and five. And he spake of trees, from the cedar tree that is in Lebanon even unto the hyssop that springeth out of the wall: he spake also of beasts, and of fowl, and of creeping things, and of fishes. And there came of all people to hear the wisdom of Solomon, from all kings of the earth, which had heard of his wisdom.” (1 Kings 4:29-34) This all happened when Solomon told God, 1“give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad: for who is able to judge this thy so great a people? And the speech pleased the Lord, that Solomon had asked this thing.” (1 Kings 3:9,10) Isn’t it amazing the things God does for people who just ask? As for Solomon, what he asked was in God’s right standing, so He acted on it. So one take away from this is that God does hear our prayers, but is more likely to do what we ask for if it is beneficial to us for His kingdom.
As for the understanding that Solomon gained, we will now get into that as well in detail. It is recorded that his wisdom and understanding came because God enlarged his heart. And because it was God’s wisdom within him, it was far greater than any others in the country. It is said that he was wiser than all men. Even his fame was made known to everyone, so everybody wanted to meet him. What I love is when it reads, 2“he spake three thousand proverbs: and his songs were a thousand and five.” (1 Kings 4:32) This resonates with me also, since I have also now recorded over 1300 full-length devotionals, and hundreds of prayers, and inspirational thoughts, up until now. Just like Solomon, God has opened my mind to know Him like never before. So I am able to see His truth in the Bible and teach it. Now, I am not bringing up what I did to lift myself up, but to give God the glory. If He was able to do great things through Solomon, He could surely take a person like me and do something similar. Speaking of Solomon, he knew so much about how people should live their lives, and also the everyday things concerning trees, animals, birds, fishes, and even raising children. This we found out in the last chapter, where Solomon rightly judged who was mother to the child of the two harlots. It was because of his wisdom that even kings from all the earth traveled to see him. This speaks of the awesome and immaculate wisdom that God gave him. My friends, please don’t think that gaining God’s wisdom is only for him or me, but for anyone that humbly comes to Him in prayer. So if you aren’t already led by God’s wisdom, then seek to do so, starting today.
Let us pray:
Oh Lord, I pray that people of all the world, who call themselves Christian, will desire the best gifts that come only from heaven. Things that we can build up spiritually and take with us when we die. These are the gifts I desire above all else. As for my time now, it is to serve You, my gracious God and Father of all creation. Whatever spiritual gifts that I have not already gained from Your hand, I am now ready to gain even more when You are ready. Lord, I am ready to take the next steps for Your kingdom and no longer sit idly by while others do Your work. I know that I have a purpose in Your kingdom, and I am grateful that You have already used me up until this point in my life. Now, I know that my time is short and I do not know the time or day that I will pass on from death and into life eternal. So I will prepare all my days to obey Your commandments and to teach people the wisdom that You have given me. You’ve opened my eyes to the Bible and every verse is like honey to my taste. I cannot meditate on Your words long enough, for there is so much wisdom and knowledge to gain. Oh, how I love Your ways, for they are pure and true in every way. It is my greatest desire to see people know You like I have come to know You. May more people reach out their hand to You in prayer, that You may lead them also home, as You have for me. Because You are near me, I am already home in Your presence. Where I will go after this life is to be with You for eternity. What a wonderful present this is. I cherish my time now to be in prayer, studying the Bible, and showcasing Your love towards others. This is in preparation to be with You in heaven. Now, if I can help lead more people to be with You also, praise the Lord. This is why I live my life. It is to be Your servant and to share the good news of the gospel. I love You, Lord. Amen.
