The story of Elijah and the prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel is very significant. Not only is it something to reflect on when it comes to God’s power being seen among wicked men, but also a teaching for us to understand in our own lives. Now, if you have read these verses in 1 Kings 18, you would know that God sent fire down from the heavens, in order to consume Elijah’s altar, that was covered in water. He did this in order to demonstrate God’s power so that people would no longer be deceived into following false gods any longer. And did this work? Yes, it did. After the altar was totally consumed by the fire of God, the people 1“fell on their faces: and they said, The Lord, he is the God; the Lord, he is the God.” (1 Kings 18:39) This is very significant, for when people see God’s power first hand, they can no longer deny Him. So why is this important now? It is because people all around the world are experiencing God’s power still. It may not be on the same level that we saw with God working through Elijah, but it is still significant. And what is most amazing of all is that God’s power is now among us His faithful in the form of the Holy Spirit. When God’s fire comes inside of us through the Spirit we can also act just like Elijah did, but with even more force since Christ lives in us. Now, you may say, I cannot tell if Jesus is in me or not? I feel no fire driving me to live for God? My friends, if you are feeling this way, then there is something wrong with your faith. Are you anxiously seeking God daily in prayer? How about your Bible reading, are you studying God’s Word daily? And how is your love for others and God, is it on full display? If these things are true, then Your light is shining forth and you will no longer be able to deny God’s power in you.
The story of Elijah on mount Carmel is below, while the whole chapter is at the end of this message…
Kings 18:16-40 (KJV)
So Obadiah went to meet Ahab, and told him: and Ahab went to meet Elijah.
And it came to pass, when Ahab saw Elijah, that Ahab said unto him, Art thou he that troubleth Israel?
And he answered, I have not troubled Israel; but thou, and thy father’s house, in that ye have forsaken the commandments of the Lord, and thou hast followed Baalim.
Now therefore send, and gather to me all Israel unto mount Carmel, and the prophets of Baal four hundred and fifty, and the prophets of the groves four hundred, which eat at Jezebel’s table.
So Ahab sent unto all the children of Israel, and gathered the prophets together unto mount Carmel.
And Elijah came unto all the people, and said, How long halt ye between two opinions? if the Lord be God, follow him: but if Baal, then follow him. And the people answered him not a word.
Then said Elijah unto the people, I, even I only, remain a prophet of the Lord; but Baal’s prophets are four hundred and fifty men.
Let them therefore give us two bullocks; and let them choose one bullock for themselves, and cut it in pieces, and lay it on wood, and put no fire under: and I will dress the other bullock, and lay it on wood, and put no fire under:
And call ye on the name of your gods, and I will call on the name of the Lord: and the God that answereth by fire, let him be God. And all the people answered and said, It is well spoken.
And Elijah said unto the prophets of Baal, Choose you one bullock for yourselves, and dress it first; for ye are many; and call on the name of your gods, but put no fire under.
And they took the bullock which was given them, and they dressed it, and called on the name of Baal from morning even until noon, saying, O Baal, hear us. But there was no voice, nor any that answered. And they leaped upon the altar which was made.
And it came to pass at noon, that Elijah mocked them, and said, Cry aloud: for he is a god; either he is talking, or he is pursuing, or he is in a journey, or peradventure he sleepeth, and must be awaked.
And they cried aloud, and cut themselves after their manner with knives and lancets, till the blood gushed out upon them.
And it came to pass, when midday was past, and they prophesied until the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that there was neither voice, nor any to answer, nor any that regarded.
And Elijah said unto all the people, Come near unto me. And all the people came near unto him. And he repaired the altar of the Lord that was broken down.
And Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, unto whom the word of the Lord came, saying, Israel shall be thy name:
And with the stones he built an altar in the name of the Lord: and he made a trench about the altar, as great as would contain two measures of seed.
And he put the wood in order, and cut the bullock in pieces, and laid him on the wood, and said, Fill four barrels with water, and pour it on the burnt sacrifice, and on the wood.
And he said, Do it the second time. And they did it the second time. And he said, Do it the third time. And they did it the third time.
And the water ran round about the altar; and he filled the trench also with water.
And it came to pass at the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that Elijah the prophet came near, and said, Lord God of Abraham, Isaac, and of Israel, let it be known this day that thou art God in Israel, and that I am thy servant, and that I have done all these things at thy word.
Hear me, O Lord, hear me, that this people may know that thou art the Lord God, and that thou hast turned their heart back again.
Then the fire of the Lord fell, and consumed the burnt sacrifice, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench.
And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces: and they said, The Lord, he is the God; the Lord, he is the God.
And Elijah said unto them, Take the prophets of Baal; let not one of them escape. And they took them: and Elijah brought them down to the brook Kishon, and slew them there.
There is a big takeaway from this reading. Any gods that we create in our own lives will not respond to our needs as God will. They are dormant and we have to do something in order for them to give us the pleasures we need. This can be our smartphones. Once they are on and active, people can spend hours on end on them, and they are quite happy. As for TV, they have taken more people away from God, then anything else before smartphones were created. We got TV Shows, Movies, and gaming consoles that take away so much precious time from God. Think of all the time you spend watching TV episodes on Netflix, movies on demand, and playing your favorite video games. And did you know that the time you offer to these things is offering yourself to them also in worship? They may not seem like gods, but you have made them your gods nonetheless. And one thing we learn from scripture is that all idolators will have their part in the lake of fire. As Jesus said, 2“I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely. He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son. But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.” (Revelation 21:6-8) Do not be part of those prophets of Baal who were slain. I say this because if you die in your idolatrous ways as they did, then you will be slain. This will happen when you are thrown into the lake of fire, which is the second death. Therefore, get right with God, by following Him instead of being wrapped up in the world. The time is now to repent and be washed by the blood of Jesus. He is waiting to receive You.
Let us pray:
Oh Lord, I pray that people will begin to experience Your great love like never before. I know that this can happen when they start seeking You first in their lives, instead of other things that only get in their way. Then will the Holy Spirit come down upon these people like a fire. It is my prayer that people will begin to limit their time using their TV, smartphones, and other devices. If people simply learned to do these things, then there would be an ample amount of time for them to pray, read the Bible, and love on people like You commanded us to do. No longer would people have less time in their day for things that You desire, but be ready and willing to do and go where you want us. We will be in the right place at the right time, in order to bless the lives of others. This is the time that we will learn to take the focus off of ourselves and onto others instead. Lord, once I started doing this, there was no turning back. I learned to love while being in the midst of the people in need. There I learned what humility and generosity really meant. I learned what it means to help one another when they cannot help themselves. Even those people that are in distress, it lifted my spirits just praying for them. Now, I love feeding the homeless, praying for people, and preaching the gospel on the streets. This is where joy is found. Joy is only masqueraded in the things of the world as real, but it is only wickedness in Your sight. We cannot find true joy that never fails unless we are in Your service, oh God. This is why I would rather trust in You than anyone else. How could I ever create a god for myself in the form of TV, smartphones, tablets, and computers, when You provide everything I need in life. I love You, Lord. You are my greatest joy of all. I give You praise and great glory. You are the one true God of the heavens. Amen.
