When people start to think that they are above reproach with God and men, they also fall because of their pride. This happens because God stops getting the glory and instead the person does for him or herself. This is very egotistical and haughty in the sight of God, of which He hates. As Solomon said, 3“the highway of the upright is to depart from evil: he that keepeth his way preserveth his soul. Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall. Better it is to be of an humble spirit with the lowly, than to divide the spoil with the proud.” (Proverbs 16:17-19) So as we are taught, we must remember that we are only upright if God is with us. And if we are being kept from evil, it is Him that does this and not ourselves. Therefore, it is better to humble ourselves before God in our good times and bad. Do not think that you are better than any other person, for this will get you in a lot of trouble. Being prideful causes people to slip up in the faith, because God is no longer in control. This is when sexual desires also increase, of which adultery and pornography come into play. Now, as much as people make out David to be a man after God’s own heart, he wasn’t always like this. For in His pride, he also fell flat on his face into adultery. Having already being married to Michal, Saul’s daughter, he decided to take Abigail, Nabal’s former wife to wed as well. He also took Ahinoam of Jezreel as his wife, where his first wife Michal was given to Phailti instead. So you see, adultery crept into his lifestyle, while his desire to love his current wife didn’t matter anymore.
What David did was very wrong. But for you to see the details for yourself, here it is from 1 Samuel 25, starting with verses 39. It reads, 2“and when David heard that Nabal was dead, he said, Blessed be the Lord, that hath pleaded the cause of my reproach from the hand of Nabal, and hath kept his servant from evil: for the Lord hath returned the wickedness of Nabal upon his own head. And David sent and communed with Abigail, to take her to him to wife. And when the servants of David were come to Abigail to Carmel, they spake unto her, saying, David sent us unto thee, to take thee to him to wife. And she arose, and bowed herself on her face to the earth, and said, Behold, let thine handmaid be a servant to wash the feet of the servants of my lord. And Abigail hasted, and arose and rode upon an ass, with five damsels of hers that went after her; and she went after the messengers of David, and became his wife. David also took Ahinoam of Jezreel; and they were also both of them his wives. But Saul had given Michal his daughter, David’s wife, to Phalti the son of Laish, which was of Gallim.” (1 Samuel 25:39-44) So how does God feel about polygamy, you might ask? Well, in Deuteronomy 17, it reads, 1“neither shall he multiply wives to himself, that his heart turn not away: neither shall he greatly multiply to himself silver and gold.” (Deuteronomy 17:17) And here we learn that God is never for this sexually immoral act. It is simply put, adultery, which will keep a person out of heaven, lest they repent. Praise God, however, that David did repent later on of this horrific act and is now saved.
Let us pray:
Oh Lord, I pray that we will not become haughty and think we are better than others. Surely, pride causes people that think they are righteous to fall deeper into sin than others. And this I worry about, since I know of many people that have done some great things, and I pray that they are giving You the glory. If not, then they may find themselves in this same boat of being more prideful then they should be. Lord, I know how wrong this is, for the times I’ve felt that I was in control of my life is when, and was good with You. is when I let down my armor. This is when temptation came in and destroyed my life. It was in my pride that I fell hard, and it wasn’t for weeks that I could find myself at a good point with You again. It was pornography that slipped back into my life, of which I hate spiritually, but my flesh loves. What a vice this is for Satan to tempt people with. Surely, many people in the faith have fallen and not come back because of pornography, fornication, and adultery. These things leave stains in our lives, and I am so happy, Lord, that You turned my heart away from such evil things. I know that if I had not come to You as quickly as I had about my sexual sins, I would also be in the same boat as others are in now. So praise be to Your Name, oh God, and Savior of my soul. Your mercy and grace have saved my soul from death and unto life eternal. Your forgiveness is what I needed to desire more of You now and less of me. I am honored to be Your humble servant, for all I need is what You offer me. If I accomplish anything worthwhile, I give You all the glory. I love You, God. Amen.
