So many people have secret sins. My question is, why do this? It is so much better to confess them and forsake them before God. As Solomon said in Proverbs, 1“he that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.” You cannot expect to have the best life, if you are living a life contrary to God. The guilt and shame will build up to a point that something will have to give. It is either your confessions to God or your own life that will break and cause you to do something that you will regret. You can certainly be like the wicked and tell yourself that you are ok and nobody knows anyways, however you are only lying to yourself. We all know that God is all knowing and sees everything. Do not be that person that Isaiah speaks of here, 2“woe unto them that seek deep to hide their counsel from the Lord, and their works are in the dark, and they say, Who seeth us? and who knoweth us?” Acting like this and saying such things is foolishness. The Lord God can see everything you’ve ever done. Nothing is in secret before His eyes. You may have hidden your sexual sins, drugs, alcohol or other addictions from your friends and family for a time, but when all is set and done, everything will be exposed. Everything that was done in the dark will one day come to light, if not now but in judgment.
One specific addiction that ruins lives is pornography and this is often done in secret. However, it is game over when a person finally gets caught looking at porn. Every secret is finally exposed and the person’s life is flipped upside down. If you were caught at work, this means termination from your job. This could mean losing your house and everything you have and becoming homeless. If you were caught by your wife, she may be so sickened by it that she may divorce you. This could also mean losing your kids in court. The same thing can be said when a person is caught in adultery. When the wife or husband finally catches their spouse via text messages, phone calls or in the act, it is most times game over for that relationship. This means, not only their spouse but many people they may have once relied on are no longer a part of their life. I know these things to be true, for it happened to me. Before I found Jesus, I looked at porn for many years and had an adulterous relationship with another women. Everything was done in secret until the day my wife started getting my text messages with the other woman. This is when she saw the name of the person I was seeing and our conversations. When this was then brought to my attention, I was speechless and knew that from that point forward nothing would be the same again for my family, including kids, and my wife.
As I mentioned above, being caught in sin is devastating and changes everything in your life for either the better or worse. I say better, because that was when I woke up and saw all my sins before God. This conviction brought me to drop every connection with that woman, devote my life back to my wife, while confessing my addiction to pornography to my wife. I then humbly came to Jesus for forgiveness and mercy. Sure, I could have come to Jesus many years earlier and confessed my sins to my wife then, but I was stubborn. Now God knew this about me and still had compassion. Even though I saw myself as the most wretched person on earth and unforgivable, God saw a person that was broken and was ready to receive me. What I thought was impossible, God saw a lot of protentional and a person He could use in His kingdom. Even my wife saw my conviction to God and stuck with me. Wow, I am so blessed. How gracious is our God. Please know, however, that if I had died in my willful sins, I would have surely gone straight to hell. It is only because God extended my life that I am here now and am born again. Now, I know that even though I chose to come to Jesus, because my sins were exposed, most people do no,t because of the hardness of their hearts. They ought to repent and make things right with God and the person they offended but often this is left undone.
Know that having our sins be exposed should cause a person to repent, however, because of the hardness in people’s hearts, most people resist God. And Jesus knew about this when he said, 3“for every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.” As you can see here, those that are wicked do not care for what is good in God. They are content with their own lives and therefore, cannot see the darkness that is before them. God is calling them to the light but they resist. Therefore, they even go so far as to disregard what their conscience says is wrong and find no need to fix it, until it is too late. This can go on for several years until bad turns into worse. As mentioned above, when a person finally gets caught they will have wished that they had confessed their sins and made right with God and the person they offended years ago. This was my case as well. For the things they will be dealing with may be very hard. However, confession before and now can all be made right with God. And when the Lord comes into our lives and changes the atmosphere, everything that is good, is restored. Sure, there are lives that will need mending, and though this may take time for some people that are affected, it is much better in the end.
So in summary, please know that all secret sins will one day come to light. If not now, they will on judgment day. So make a choice now to make peace with God while you have the chance. You may not have as much time on earth that I had to repent. And please know that when I fall into sin, that I go to the person that is offended and say sorry right away now, including God. Since coming to Jesus I have fallen into certain things that I am not proud of, but it is so much better when I’ve confessed those things to God and to those affected. It is like a load is lifted off of my shoulders each time. I say this, in order to help you understand the need to confess your sins to God, that you may be forgiven. Please know that while you live in willful sin, the Holy Spirit will not be with you. Until you break free, you will be in bondage. Paul also talked about those that live in willful sin and did nothing about it. He said, 4“for if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, but a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation.” 4“Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God.” 4“It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.” So let this be a warning that God hates sin and His wrath is upon those in it. So repent today. Call out to God and His mercy and grace will be upon you. Your confessions will be heard and all things will be made right in His sight.
Let us pray:
Oh Lord, I pray that people will turn from their sins and follow You, starting today. May they recognize their sins, that they may be brought into the light. I know that secret sins can be very heavy on a person, so I ask that You come into these people’s lives and convict them. That way they may be broken and find a need for a Savior. Until this happens, I am afraid that their pride will get in the way. So what we need Lord is an awakening of sin in people’s lives. We need people that are willing to hear Your voice and do something with their lives. Not themselves but allowing Your arms in, that they may be born again. We are incapable of living a good life that pleases You on our own and need Your armor to help us. Come and build us up today that we may withstand the temptation of the evil one. Bring us out of every evil situation that we may become stronger each time to resist. And when we fall, please help get right back up and confess our sins. This way, those that are hurt will find peace and we will find mercy. You can see everything in our lives Lord, so today, we give it all You. Anything that is unworthy, take it from us, that we may live uprightly in Your site. May Your love overflow inside of us and into everyone we meet. This we pray Lord, in this Holy Name, Jesus. Amen.
