As I was listening to the book of Numbers today, I came across an important verse that even Paul the apostle spoke of. It is written, speaking to Joshua, 1“and Moses said unto him, Enviest thou for my sake? would God that all the Lord’s people were prophets, and that the Lord would put his spirit upon them!” (Numbers 11:29) This was said after 1“the Lord came down in a cloud, and spake unto him, and took of the spirit that was upon him, and gave it unto the seventy elders: and it came to pass, that, when the spirit rested upon them, they prophesied, and did not cease. But there remained two of the men in the camp, the name of the one was Eldad, and the name of the other Medad: and the spirit rested upon them; and they were of them that were written, but went not out unto the tabernacle: and they prophesied in the camp. And there ran a young man, and told Moses, and said, Eldad and Medad do prophesy in the camp.” (Numbers 11:25-27) And so we see an outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon the people and these men of God prophesied. However, it was Joshua who didn’t like what was happening and said, 1“my lord Moses, forbid them.” (Numbers 11:28) This is when Moses rebuked him and said that he wished every person was filled with the spirit and prophesied, as we just read before. So is this teaching on prophesy also in the New Testament. Of course! Even during the day of Pentecost, in Acts 2, there was an outpouring of the Holy Spirit like what happened here. This gift of prophesy never stopped being important, even in the New Testament church.
Paul said, 2“follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy. For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries. But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort. He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church. I would that ye all spake with tongues but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying.” (1 Corinthians 14:1-5) Wow! Paul also said that he wished that all would prophesy, for it edifieth the church. Surely, when God is giving us direction, this is edification in action from His hand, who is within us. Therefore, if more people were filled with the Holy Spirit, many of them would also prophesy like in times past. However, some churches have taken prophesy and then set apart prophets in their own churches to be their leaders and not Jesus. These cultish churches, like Mormonism, even sing a song that says, “follow the prophet”. However, we know that the Bible teaches that 3“God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds.” (Hebrews 1:1,2) Therefore, prophesy is a gift from God, but we are to never be elevated in the church because of this gift.
Let us pray:
Oh Lord, I pray that You will fill this church with the Holy Spirit. May there be an outpouring of Your gifts upon the people in our day. I know that the time is at hand when You will soon return, Jesus, so we are gearing up to preach the gospel to all the world. I just desire that more laborers will come out of their safety zones and be a part of the harvest. We need more witnesses to fill the streets and be Your willing movers and shakers in the world at large. This world is in deep sleep when it comes to the things of God and they need an awakening, both body and spirit. Sin is killing them and they don’t realize it. This is why the Holy Spirit is so needed in all our lives. I need to be led daily by Your hand, but if other believers are not, then they are no different than the world. Surely, people may say that they love You in worship, while at church, but living a life that is full of sin makes them hypocrites. This cannot be happening if people desire to be saved. So please, Lord, awaken them. Come and do a mighty work that has never been seen before. Pour out Your Spirit like in times past. I pray that people will start dreaming dreams, having visions, and start prophesying. I have been given dreams and visions from on high and You have allowed me to see the future. Thank You, Jesus. May this gift of the Holy Spirit come regularly as I seek Your hand. I also pray that other people in the church will come to know You personally. That they will find time to pray, read the Bible, and go out and do Your will daily. This is what it means to love You. Then, can they encounter things that are not of this world. Your ways are higher. I love You, Lord. I give You praise. Amen.
