Today’s Devotional comes from Psalm 82 and John 10. Both of these chapters go hand in hand. Even Jesus cross references a verse from Psalm 82 as he was addressing the Jews. Jesus was explaining His divinity with the Father, when he said, 3“My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand. I and my Father are one.” Saying this, let everyone know that He is the Son of God, in the flesh. And not only that, but that God, the Father, and Him are one. The Jews thought this was utter blasphemy as they 3“took up stones again to stone him.” In their disbelief, Jesus asked them, 3“Many good works have I shewed you from my Father; for which of those works do ye stone me?” The Jews then responded, 3“For a good work we stone thee not; but for blasphemy; and because that thou, being a man, makest thyself God.” His good works, they could stand, but once Jesus started calling Himself God, they didn’t want anything of it. Jesus then made mention a verse from Psalm 82 to help His case. 3“Jesus answered them, Is it not written in your law, I said, Ye are gods? If he called them gods, unto whom the word of God came, and the scripture cannot be broken.” This brings us to what was meant by “gods”, in this reference. David explains this in Psalm 82. Let us continue on and learn from the Word.
Psalm 82 starts off by saying, 1“God standeth in the congregation of the mighty; he judgeth among the gods.” Who are these people that are called gods? We come to find out in the next coming verses. 1“How long will ye judge unjustly, and accept the persons of the wicked? Selah. Defend the poor and fatherless: do justice to the afflicted and needy. Deliver the poor and needy: rid them out of the hand of the wicked.” There were important judges, in the old testament, and as you can see, some were not judging justly. It was asked of them to not accept the wicked. They were to help those in need. Lend a helping hand to the poor. People were being led astray and these judges could help be a light to them. To these Israelites, God said to them, 1“Ye are gods; and all of you are children of the most High.” Though these were normal men and would die in the same fashion, they had a higher calling from God, while on earth. However, all this was done away when Jesus came into the world. 2He is our final judge. Jesus said to the Jews that He is 3“the Son of God” and because he does the works of His Father, they believe Him not. However, Jesus never gave up on them and said, 3“believe the works: that ye may know, and believe, that the Father is in me, and I in him.” Jesus is the Son of God. 2Whosever believeth in Him shall be saved.
Let us pray:
Oh Lord, I know that You are God. Lord Jesus, I am grateful to have Your presence in my life. As You are in the Father, I pray that I may always be in the Son. I pray that my own desires become less each day and that my focus is turned ever so closer to You. My life is to serve You. This new life is because of Your great love for me and I just want to share it with others. I pray that more people can come to know You, the living God. I know that salvation is only found within You. I can search all I want to for happiness but I will never be satisfied unless it is found in You. I know this from experience and I always came out empty handed. I am grateful that Your love has come inside my life. May Your light shine within me, that the lost maybe found. I will go wherever You lead me. I will do whatever You have for my life. I believe in You above all things. My trust is found in You. My hope is in the rock of my salvation. You are my rock and I shall stand strong. My faith in You keeps me going. I love You. Amen.
