In Job, chapter 39, God continued to speak to Job about His creation. How every type of animal is numbered by God. How He knows every detail about them. And in speaking to Job, He talked about wild calves, wild asses, unicorns, peacocks, ostriches, grasshoppers, hawks, and eagles in great detail. All these animals are here today, but possibly one, which could very well be extinct, which are unicorns. About them, God said, 2“will the unicorn be willing to serve thee, or abide by thy crib? Canst thou bind the unicorn with his band in the furrow? or will he harrow the valleys after thee? Wilt thou trust him, because his strength is great? or wilt thou leave thy labour to him? Wilt thou believe him, that he will bring home thy seed, and gather it into thy barn?” (Job 39:9-12) So here we have it. The legend of the unicorn is real. And now we have real details of that great beast. What we know is that the unicorn was very strong. That he was unable to be bound up or be kept in a barn. Now, looking up the Latin definition of the unicorn we get the word “unicornis”, which refers to an animal that is “one-horned, having a single horn.” Now, in our day, the animal with the name Rhinoceros is often looked at for being this unicorn in scripture. It is because the Rhinoceros also has the name “Rhinoceros Unicornis” along with it. And what is so cool is that Rhinos still exist, even the type with one horn, like the Indian Rhinoceros. And there is more to these animals that we will get to next in our study.
When Jacob blessed his son Joseph, he also mentions unicorns. You will see this as we read this blessing together. 1“And of Joseph he said, Blessed of the Lord be his land, for the precious things of heaven, for the dew, and for the deep that coucheth beneath, And for the precious fruits brought forth by the sun, and for the precious things put forth by the moon, and for the chief things of the ancient mountains, and for the precious things of the lasting hills, and for the precious things of the earth and fulness thereof, and for the good will of him that dwelt in the bush: let the blessing come upon the head of Joseph, and upon the top of the head of him that was separated from his brethren. His glory is like the firstling of his bullock, and his horns are like the horns of unicorns: with them he shall push the people together to the ends of the earth: and they are the ten thousands of Ephraim, and they are the thousands of Manasseh.” (Deuteronomy 33:13-17) The horns of Joseph are like unto the horns of unicorns. And in speaking of Joseph, with these horns would people be pushed to the ends of the earth. So we know that unicorns were known for their power and might. One thing we don’t know is if they are the rhinos we see today, larger rhinos that are now extinct, or even unicorns, like we see in children’s movies. All we know is that God knows this mystery. As for us, we are also unique in God’s kingdom, like His animal creation. We all have an important purpose with God.
Let us pray:
Oh Lord, thank You for all Your creation. You are the best architect that exists in heaven and earth. Your handiwork is unmatched. What You are able to achieve is stunning in everything about it. How awesome are the different types of animals upon this earth. They are all uniquely made and have their own characteristics about them that make them special in their own way. I love to admire horses and how elegant they look and trot upon the earth. The giraffe, and how tall it really is in person, along with it’s neck. It is able to reach the highest tree branches with ease. Even the elephant is so unique with its big ears, which helps them keep cool in the blazing sun. Lord, camels are made perfectly with their two humps on their back, in order to transport goods and people throughout this earth. And I can go on talking about how cool the hippo’s look, but how fierce they really are in person. Truly, what You are able to do and create will never be achieved by any mere human. We are also Your handiwork and are created in Your image. What an amazing thing it is to have my spirit be put in a baby boy at birth, in order to one day have me grow up to know You personally. Lord, I do pray that people will see Your creation and give You glory. Everything we see on earth is a sign from heaven above. You did it all, Lord. It is people who are using what You have given us for our needs. Thank You! I love You, Jesus. I lift You up in praise and honor. You are my king and I worship You. Amen.
