When it comes to people in Israel versus others, God made sure that they were different than the world. That is why there were so many laws that they followed back then. One of those laws was about not cutting ourselves or print any marks upon ourselves. This is what we know as tattoos. It was told by God to the people, 1“ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor print any marks upon you: I am the Lord.” (Leviticus 19:28) And Moses also said, 2“ye are the children of the Lord your God: ye shall not cut yourselves, nor make any baldness between your eyes for the dead. For thou art an holy people unto the Lord thy God, and the Lord hath chosen thee to be a peculiar people unto himself, above all the nations that are upon the earth.” (Deuteronomy 14:1,2) And here we understand why the people of God were not to cut themselves. It is because these people were the chosen of God. They were made to be His peculiar people and not the same as the world. And because God was with them, they became a holy people unto Him. Other people could also see that they were different because of how they feared God and obeyed His commandments. So now we have God’s people on one side and other people who were into worshiping other gods and/or had evil spirits living in and among them. What these other people did was cut themselves. Never once do we hear about people of love and serve the true God of the heavens cutting themselves. And why would they? They are God’s creation and would not want to desecrate their bodies.
When the prophets of Baal had made an altar for their god and he wasn’t responding to their amount of worship and prayers they did something very interesting. It is recorded that 3“they cried aloud, and cut themselves after their manner with knives and lancets, till the blood gushed out upon them.” (1 Kings 18:28) The same can be said for the man who Jesus and the disciples found in the tombs, who was possessed by demons. It is recorded that he was known for the following, 4“always, night and day, he was in the mountains, and in the tombs, crying, and cutting himself with stones.” (Mark 5:5) So both the false prophets of Baal and people possessed by demons cut themselves, which the people of God did not. Did this practice change in the New Testament? Interestingly enough, nothing is spoken on this topic after Jesus came into the world. So did the people of Israel stop obeying what God said about cutting yourself and printing tattoos? The answer is No. The Jews kept this practice going because of their love for God’s commands. And because this practice separated them from the world, it is important to know that it is still God’s will. We are to be separate then people who get tattoos and body piercings. Therefore, do as Paul said and 5“come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you. And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty”. (2 Corinthians 6:17,18) This may come as an attack to people, but it shouldn’t. God’s people are different.
Let us pray:
Oh Lord, I pray that people will learn the difference between doing things that are holy and unholy in Your sight. I love the Bible for it is our best source of truth when it comes to doing Your will or the world. I love to look to You for understanding, for You continually pour out more and more wisdom when I search the scriptures. I once thought I knew a lot about Your Word, but I was so wrong. Every day that I read the Bible, more and more verses come to life and I am that much stronger in the faith. Lord, I love it how Your teachings convict me of my sins, for I would never want to continually live a life that goes against You but only live my life for You. I am sorry if I have sinned and ask for Your forgiveness and mercy. Your ways are true and faithful and all I can say to them is, “Your will be done”. I may not be capable of living up to all Your commands, but You are able to help me. So Lord, help me stay vigilant and strong in the faith and be not drawn in any direction where Your light is not there. I would never want to be apart from You, so keep me on Your righteous path which leads to heaven. Lord, I wish for not only myself but others to also come to faith and no longer live in their sinful ways. There are many people out there who have done some crazy bad things as I have, but there is still hope for them. They may be of the world now, but still, they can be redeemed and cleansed by Your blood. Lord, cast out all the darkness in their lives and lead them into Your light. Help them become a peculiar people, as You have done for me, a person who is holy in Your sight. I love You, God. Amen.
