After the flood, the people on the earth started to be very prideful and carried away in their own wisdom. They had lost touch with God. Because of the flood, all the people were of one speech. They all understood each other and therefore could carry out their plans with ease. They thought they were above God for they had the power to build a tower in Babel that could reach the heavens. What they didn’t take note of is that the Lord God is more powerful than anyone. They may have had power to build a mighty fortress but God has power to tear it down in an instant. As they built their tower the Lord said, “Indeed the people are one and they all have one language, and this is what they begin to do; now nothing that they propose to do will be withheld from them. Come, let Us go down and there confuse their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech.” So all of the people’s hard work was ceased. Because they could no longer understand each other they could no longer give or take orders. All of the work going towards the building stopped and people just went their own ways in confusion. How disappointing they must have felt when in one instant life was going just as planned and then shattered before their eyes. If they just knew the Lord’s plan for them. He had come to save them from themselves. There was still a way home to God if they might find Him.
We are not much different than those that built the tower of Babel. Most people’s lives are focused on wealth and self-gratification above all things. They feel like they can do anything on their own. All they need is someone to help with their projects and they can achieve what they desire. Relying on another person’s opinion takes precedence over God. People are relying on google for answers to Bible questions. People ask their smart phone more questions than God. They carry their phone with them everywhere as their Bible is at home collecting dust. Technology is changing how people interact with each other. People are less talkative and more preoccupied with their phones. People would rather use social media or text rather than call or visit someone. Not only are we trusting more on other things and people but we are becoming more into ourselves. God is watching all of this take shape. He can see how this generation has turned from Him. He can see how people are less in tune with Him through prayer. People have less time in their day for God. People would rather play a game on their phone then read the Bible. If you have fallen into these same traps, change your life today. Do the necessary things to get your life in order with God. God’s love is much more valuable than anything this world can offer. Nothing can come close to the joy I’ve felt in prayer with my God. The Bible has awakened my soul.
Genesis 11:1-8
1 Now the whole earth had one language and one speech.
2 And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar, and they dwelt there.
3 Then they said to one another, “Come, let us make bricks and bake them thoroughly.” They had brick for stone, and they had asphalt for mortar.
4 And they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower whose top is in the heavens; let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be scattered abroad over the face of the whole earth.”
5 But the Lord came down to see the city and the tower which the sons of men had built.
6 And the Lord said, “Indeed the people are one and they all have one language, and this is what they begin to do; now nothing that they propose to do will be withheld from them.
7 Come, let Us go down and there confuse their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech.”
8 So the Lord scattered them abroad from there over the face of all the earth, and they ceased building the city.
