It is more than a tradition to “honour thy father and thy mother“. This is a commandment of God and when breaking it, it dishonors the Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus spoke about people that disregard this commandment, “in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men”. He mentioned the hypocrites who have a tradition to obey this law but blatantly disobey it and tell others to as well. Be found in favor with God and not just honoring Him with your lips. His commandment is directed to each of us. Children should honor their parents and not argue with their decisions. When our parents are older and have extra needs, care for them without thinking twice. And to the Father and Mother, this commandment is for you as well. If your spouse is teaching your child something important, don’t interrupt them and tell them they are wrong. How can a child honor their father if their mother doesn’t stand up for them. Children will more easily grow up in disobedience to one or two of their parents if their parents can’t agree on their parenting skills. It is so important that we take heart to this commandment. Live this day to serve the Lord and do His will. Honor your father and mother for by doing so we are honoring the Lord. We are magnifying Him in the way we serve the Lord and others.
To all children, cease all quarreling with your parents. Listen to them as they speak. Be submissive to their counsel as to God. To all adults, care for your parents. If they have a need don’t complain but do what you can to lift them up. Be there for them when they need it most. To all parents, listen to your spouse when he or she is counseling your child. Don’t argue with them, in these moments. If you have concerns about what they are saying, pull them aside and talk with them out of love. In doing this, God will be lifted up in the lives of our family. His commandment will be magnified in the way we live. God gave us this commandment to understand what it means to be submissive to one another. It humbles ourselves among Him and others. It is no longer our decisions that have the most merit in life but what matters to God and our neighbor. Take heed to this message and listen to God’s counsel. This commandment is a guide to help us learn from our Father in heaven. Oh Lord, I humbly bow down before You. Whatever You will for my life, let it be done. If You have counsel for me now, deliver it to my mind. I am listening and ready to obey. I trust in You. Thank You for my wonderful parents. They have taught me right from wrong and how to truly be submissive. Their wise counsel has led me to know You. But most of all, this commandment, has led me to follow You.
Matthew 15:4-9 (KJV)
4 For God commanded, saying, Honour thy father and mother: and, He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death.
5 But ye say, Whosoever shall say to his father or his mother, It is a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me;
6 And honour not his father or his mother, he shall be free. Thus have ye made the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition.
7 Ye hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you, saying,
8 This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.
9 But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.
Hi Paul,
Thank you for speaking truth. Where are you located…your name sounds familiar and If I recollect correctly you may have known my former husband.
