My God, My God, Why Hast Thou Forsaken Me?

As David was crying out to God for help, he didn’t realize that Jesus would one day pray the same thing while He was paying for our sins on the cross.  David wrote, “My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? why art thou so far from helping me, and from the words of my roaring?” (Psalm 22:1)  This same phrase in bold above is important to Jesus’s atonement on the cross.  This is when Jesus no longer had the Father with Him and He was alone to finish the payment of sins on His own.  This was done because God knew that sacrificial offerings by way of animals would never fulfill the real payment for sins.  This process would continue forever unless a perfect Lamb would come and die for our sins once and for all.  And so Jesus, being the Lamb of God, and perfect in every way, was the fulfillment of this promise to end these sacrifices in His blood.  Through His shed blood on the cross, those who believe in Him are redeemed.  They are sanctified and made clean, while having their sins washed away.

Because the cross is so important and vital to the gospel message, we will now read what happened as Jesus was suffering for our sins.  It is written, “now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour. And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? Some of them that stood there, when they heard that, said, This man calleth for Elias. And straightway one of them ran, and took a spunge, and filled it with vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink. The rest said, Let be, let us see whether Elias will come to save him. Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost.” (Matthew 27:45-50)  Jesus atoned for our sins on the cross.  Through His death, we receive the atonement for our sins.  Payment in full.  However, this sacrifice is for those who believe in Jesus.  In this life can we be made clean through Jesus and go to heaven in the next.  Without Him we are lost. Amen.

Let us pray:
Oh Lord, I pray that people will come to know You, Jesus, and be saved.  That they will receive the atoning sacrifice that was made for us on the cross.  I believe in You, Lord.  Salvation can only come through believing in You, alone.  No other person or thing can lead us to heaven but You, Jesus.  May this become crystal clear in the ears, hearts, and minds, of every person who wants to go to heaven.  I only wish to see more people set free from captivity and into Your loving arms of mercy and grace.  Lord, scatter the darkness and lead more people into Your light.  May more people see deep down that they need a Savior and also cry out to You for mercy.  There is peace when a person surrenders all to follow You.  There is boldness when people go all in to serve You.  My life is for You and to do Your will as it is in heaven is all I ask for.  Thank You for adopting me in as Your son and not leaving me behind.  You are my God, my Savior, my Redeemer, my Rock, and my Firm Foundation, Jesus.  I love You, Lord.  Amen.
