Communion

Communion, or as the Bible says, “the Lord’s supper”, is something that a Christian should be partaking in often if not weekly. This is when bread and grape juice is passed around for the congregation to take part in and eat while in church. But why do churches do this? It is to remember Jesus. When we eat the bread, we remember Him while he was on earth. All the many miracles, His teachings, His great example for us all, and His willingness to suffer on the cross. When we drink the cup, we do this in remembrance of Jesus’s death on the cross. This is where Jesus died and bled for our sins. It was important that He became the last lamb to be sacrificed for sin, and His fulfillment in this makes Jesus the Lamb of God. He came to take away the sins of the world, and those who believe in Jesus make this a reality in their lives. Now, to help you understand more about the communion, Paul taught the following… “For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, that the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread: And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me. After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, this cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me.” (1 Corinthians 11:23-25)

Communion is something that was very important to the early church, which should still be in the church of Christ today. Is your church still doing this? I pray that it is, for this is a sign of a good Bible-believing church. One who keeps to the teachings of the New Testament, while teaching verse by verse from the Bible. Now, as we’ve learned, the Lord’s supper is important for us to do often, even until the coming of the Lord. However, did you know that only people who are worthy in God’s sight should be participating? This is very true and I pray that your church teaches this also. Paul taught, “for as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord’s death till he come. Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup. For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body.” (1 Corinthians 11:26-29) So get right with God if you have not already. This means confessing your sins before the Lord, that you may be forgiven. Turn from your wicked ways to Jesus. Then, will you be wrapped up in His armor and desire to take communion, because you are now His. This is what Jesus wants from all of us. Are you His now? Come unto Him if you have not already.

Let us pray:
Oh Lord, I pray that we will continually remember You by way of communion. This is such an important time that we come together as Christians and partake of the supper of the Lord. Yes, Lord, it is an honor to partake of the bread and the cup, in order to remember Your body and the blood that was shed for us on the cross. These emblems we take of and hold in our hands are holy and so we partake of them when we are worthy. I would never wish to participate when I have fallen into sin, as Paul taught in 1 Corinthians 11. To jeopardize my relationship with You, in order to simply fit in with the crowd would be terrible. I know the importance of communion, but I do not wish to desecrate it with my unclean hands. Therefore, I will think upon what I have done for You this past week, and if the Spirit was with me, then I will partake. Living worthy in Your sight is what You expect of each one of Your true believers. And I know that more people in the faith would be walking in Your abundant light if they would simply turn to You in constant prayer. Many things have taken hold of people’s lives and hearts, which has also removed their relationship with You. This is sad that people in the faith have fallen away, but I pray for their safe return. You have led me safely back and I pray that many more people will return and be saved. In all things, I pray that Your will, will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Have Your way in my life and others in Your church today. I love You. Amen.

  1. Amen and Amen I hope that I’m worthy to partake of communion when I partake of it. Confess your sins to God while you still have time to do so. If God woke you up today, thank Him and praise Him that you have another day to either get right with God or keep living for Him. Many do not have that opportunity any longer.
