In Famine, God’s Wrath Was Upon Saul

What we learn from 2 Samuel 21 is that God honors the oaths made unto Him. Even the oath that Joshua made to Gibeon, to not harm his people. It was said that 1“all the princes said unto all the congregation, We have sworn unto them by the Lord God of Israel: now therefore we may not touch them. This we will do to them; we will even let them live, lest wrath be upon us, because of the oath which we sware unto them.” (Joshua 9:19-20) So the people of Israel swore to never lay a hand on them, in order to kill them. However, Saul did not honor this oath, and therefore, God’s wrath was upon him and his seed, for what he did to those people in Gibeah, where the Gibeonites were. This brings us to 1 Samuel 22, where Saul slew Ahimelech, the high priests, men, women, even children of that city. It is recorded that 2“the king said, Thou shalt surely die, Ahimelech, thou, and all thy father’s house. And the king said unto the footmen that stood about him, Turn, and slay the priests of the Lord: because their hand also is with David, and because they knew when he fled, and did not shew it to me. But the servants of the king would not put forth their hand to fall upon the priests of the Lord. And the king said to Doeg, Turn thou, and fall upon the priests. And Doeg the Edomite turned, and he fell upon the priests, and slew on that day fourscore and five persons that did wear a linen ephod. And Nob, the city of the priests, smote he with the edge of the sword, both men and women, children and sucklings, and oxen, and asses, and sheep, with the edge of the sword.” (1 Samuel 22:16-19) Wow, how sad, that this slaughter had to happen to God’s anointed priests and his people.

So what was God’s response to what Saul did to the people of Gibeah? Well, there was a famine in Israel since David became king, because of Saul. Even God’s wrath was upon Saul. It is recorded that 3“there was a famine in the days of David three years, year after year; and David enquired of the Lord. And the Lord answered, It is for Saul, and for his bloody house, because he slew the Gibeonites. And the king called the Gibeonites, and said unto them; (now the Gibeonites were not of the children of Israel, but of the remnant of the Amorites; and the children of Israel had sworn unto them: and Saul sought to slay them in his zeal to the children of Israel and Judah.) Wherefore David said unto the Gibeonites, What shall I do for you? and wherewith shall I make the atonement, that ye may bless the inheritance of the Lord? And the Gibeonites said unto him, We will have no silver nor gold of Saul, nor of his house; neither for us shalt thou kill any man in Israel. And he said, What ye shall say, that will I do for you.” (2 Samuel 21:1-4) Of which the Gibeonites required seven of Saul’s sons to be brought to them, in order for them to pay the atonement for what Saul did. So they were brought forth and were hanged before the people and the Lord. Of which this ended the famine and rain began to fall down again from the heavens. So we learn that God’s wrath is upon people who break their oath with him. However, because Jesus did for our sins, all we need to do now is repent and cry out to Him for mercy. Then, will His blood cover us and we will be made clean. It may not have been this way before, but Jesus came to be our Savior so that his blood can cleanse us from every sin.

Let us pray:
Oh Lord, I am so grateful for the atonement You made for our sins. Because of what You have done for us on the cross, there is no more sacrifice needed for sins. You already made a way that we might be forgiven because of the blood You shed, that no other blood would have to be shed again. Thank You, Lord. I am so grateful that You did come to this earth, in order to redeem Your people, even the gentiles that believe in You, from their sins. Because I am adopted in, I am able to experience the blessings that You have bestowed upon Your people. What a great gift, of which I cherish every day of my life. Thank You for allowing me to be a part of Your kingdom, God. I may have been defiant and not worthy to be in Your presence in the past, but now my heart has been changed. You have transformed my life, and now all I want to do is do Your will and not my own. It would be selfish to live out the lusts of my flesh any longer when I could be out doing work in Your harvest. People are hurting all around the world, and I am grateful that You have sent me and so many others to help them. We are Your hands and feet, and for You to move in our lives, brings us the greatest joy. I don’t have to have the best things in this world to be happy, but the best things that You have to offer me. These things that You offer I can take with me in heaven, of which I am much more happy with. Surely, the pleasure in this life will end, but Your love never ends. So be with me all my days. Come and make a place in my life, that all darkness will be scattered. I love You, Lord. Amen.

8 That all of you have conspired against me, and there is none that sheweth me that my son hath made a league with the son of Jesse, and there is none of you that is sorry for me, or sheweth unto me that my son hath stirred up my servant against me, to lie in wait, as at this day?

2 Samuel 21
32 Samuel 21 (KJV)
1 Then there was a famine in the days of David three years, year after year; and David enquired of the Lord. And the Lord answered, It is for Saul, and for his bloody house, because he slew the Gibeonites.
2 And the king called the Gibeonites, and said unto them; (now the Gibeonites were not of the children of Israel, but of the remnant of the Amorites; and the children of Israel had sworn unto them: and Saul sought to slay them in his zeal to the children of Israel and Judah.)
3 Wherefore David said unto the Gibeonites, What shall I do for you? and wherewith shall I make the atonement, that ye may bless the inheritance of the Lord?
4 And the Gibeonites said unto him, We will have no silver nor gold of Saul, nor of his house; neither for us shalt thou kill any man in Israel. And he said, What ye shall say, that will I do for you.
5 And they answered the king, The man that consumed us, and that devised against us that we should be destroyed from remaining in any of the coasts of Israel,
6 Let seven men of his sons be delivered unto us, and we will hang them up unto the Lord in Gibeah of Saul, whom the Lord did choose. And the king said, I will give them.

9 And he delivered them into the hands of the Gibeonites, and they hanged them in the hill before the Lord: and they fell all seven together, and were put to death in the days of harvest, in the first days, in the beginning of barley harvest.
10 And Rizpah the daughter of Aiah took sackcloth, and spread it for her upon the rock, from the beginning of harvest until water dropped upon them out of heaven, and suffered neither the birds of the air to rest on them by day, nor the beasts of the field by night.
11 And it was told David what Rizpah the daughter of Aiah, the concubine of Saul, had done.
12 And David went and took the bones of Saul and the bones of Jonathan his son from the men of Jabeshgilead, which had stolen them from the street of Bethshan, where the Philistines had hanged them, when the Philistines had slain Saul in Gilboa:

14 And the bones of Saul and Jonathan his son buried they in the country of Benjamin in Zelah, in the sepulchre of Kish his father: and they performed all that the king commanded. And after that God was intreated for the land.

17 But Abishai the son of Zeruiah succoured him, and smote the Philistine, and killed him. Then the men of David sware unto him, saying, Thou shalt go no more out with us to battle, that thou quench not the light of Israel.
18 And it came to pass after this, that there was again a battle with the Philistines at Gob: then Sibbechai the Hushathite slew Saph, which was of the sons of the giant.
19 And there was again a battle in Gob with the Philistines, where Elhanan the son of Jaareoregim, a Bethlehemite, slew the brother of Goliath the Gittite, the staff of whose spear was like a weaver’s beam.
20 And there was yet a battle in Gath, where was a man of great stature, that had on every hand six fingers, and on every foot six toes, four and twenty in number; and he also was born to the giant.
21 And when he defied Israel, Jonathan the son of Shimeah the brother of David slew him.
22 These four were born to the giant in Gath, and fell by the hand of David, and by the hand of his servants.
