The Importance Of Baptism

I pray that everyone that has faith in Christ, also repents and commits to baptism. Why is this so important? Well, to answer this, we will allow the Bible to do the speaking. Paul said to the Galatians, 2“for as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.” I love God’s answer to baptism, through His Word, for it is clear that in baptism, we put on Christ. It is not only our faith alone but Jesus dwelling inside of us that makes the difference. This process begins when we go under the water. Paul explained this process to the Romans here, 1“know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?” As we go into the water, we die to our sins, as Christ died for our sins on the cross. In that moment, we receive the washing of our sins, through Jesus’s blood and we are forgiven. As Christ died, 1“we are buried with him by baptism into death”. This is when something amazing happens inside of us. Our desires and passions are changed and we no longer desire to walk in sin. 1“Our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.” This moment, while in the water, is truly remarkable. It is where we receive the power of God to fight against sin. Then, as we come out of the water, we are made new in Christ Jesus. Just 1“as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.” This sets the stage of our walk in faith, for the rest of our lives. We cannot be led to Jesus on our own. We need the Holy Spirit, through baptism.

Paul’s explanation of baptism should help you all understand the important of this event and why everyone in the faith does it. Being baptized showcases our true faith in God. We no longer wish to have faith alone but are committed to serve Him. We have turned from our sins and our own good works. We are now ready to have God’s works flow through us. We are also ready to turn from our sins and allow the Lord to change our wicked hearts. Regarding baptism, Paul continues to teach, 1“if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him.” This is truly the time of our lives when we die to ourselves and live unto God. What we have done in the past, we put on the table and give it all to God. We then put our trust in Him, through baptism. This where the Holy Spirit then comes into our lives and we are born again. This new life in Christ is what we all need to set our walk with Christ in motion. This is because we are 1“dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Our whole life ends and starts again in the water. We receive the fire of the Holy Spirit and are truly made alive again. We no longer obey the lusts of the flesh but live for Christ. This makes us children of God, as Christ is now moving inside of us. Paul related this to being baptized. 2“For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.” There is a cause and effect here. Our faith in Jesus leads us to the waters of baptism. We then put on Christ and the Spirit comes to lead us in the ways of righteousness.

Let us pray:
Oh Lord, I pray that people in the faith will be convicted of their sins and repent. May this conviction to follow You, lead them to the waters of baptism. So many people rely on their faith alone for salvation. However, what they do not realize is that faith without works is dead. To live their life alone, without You, is no salvation at all. I am so grateful for baptism. That is the time that You did come into my life and made me alive. I was dead but was crucified with You, at the cross, Jesus. Then, as I come out of the water, You give me newness of life. This was my new beginning and I am so grateful for this opportunity to have You in my life now. I was so lost in this world without You. In baptism, You have set a fire in my soul to serve You, my King. Where there was so much darkness in my life, You have scattered it and ushered in Your light. Where there was shame and guilt, You’ve replaced it with Your love. I no longer serve the lusts of the flesh but fight it with You, Jesus, in my life. You are my shield and my fortress. I am made strong with You by my side. Thank You for coming into my life, through baptism. I needed You and You came. Thank You so much, dear Lord. I believe in You. I trust in You. You are my joy. I love You. Amen.

1Romans 6:1-12 (KJV)
1 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?
2 God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?
3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?
4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
5 For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:
6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.
7 For he that is dead is freed from sin.
8 Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him:
9 Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him.
10 For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God.
11 Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.
12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof.

2Galatians 3:22-29 (KJV)
22 But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe.
23 But before faith came, we were kept under the law, shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed.
24 Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.
25 But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster.
26 For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.
27 For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.
28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.
29 And if ye be Christ’s, then are ye Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.

  1. Baptism is a requirement for believers and I am glad you wrote this. When I was small I was told to get baptized as an “outward symbol of an inner change”. I now know that it is a required command for believers. Everyone should know this. It isn’t just for show it is for necessity to enter God’s kingdom.
